Feature Restaurant: Talay Thai - A True Taste of Thailand

Meaning ‘the sea’ in Thai, Talay is the fitting name chosen by Peter and Nong Sharp for their beautiful business, given the Shore seaside suburb where it is based, and, the superb seafood offerings on the menu.

Talay Thai has been delighting residents of Milford and beyond since 2011 with its sweet, authentic interior and its hard-to-beat Asian dishes prepared by its expert chef, formerly of The Marriott Hotel in Bangkok.

Owners Peter and Nong take food seriously and are appropriately light-hearted in the service they offer customers, where traditional Thai politeness and smiles reign. Both are connoisseurs of Thai cuisine, with Peter having a particular penchant for duck dishes.

“My favourite dish has got to be the duck, because we cook it in the traditional Thai style, using only the freshest duck, it really is delicious. That is definitely one of our signature dishes. I also have a soft spot for the BBQ beef!”

And their Thai food is not only a hit for dinnertime diners. Peter added: “Our lunches are starting to get very, very popular! For only $10.50, its a very tasty, hearty lunchtime meal. On the weekends it gets very busy, but most especially on Fridays. Sometimes we are having to turn people away and ask them to come back a little later.”

The couple are excited about the way Milford is developing. Pete said: “Milford is starting to really click. There are going to be more and more people coming into Milford to live, to work and to dine out. We’re noticing that we’re getting a lot more younger people coming in now than we used to.”

As well as an extensive menu featuring all the classic Thai favourites such as Pad Med Ma Muang, Panang Curry, Mussamun Lamb and Pad Thai, the restaurant offers regularly changing blackboard specials. Gluten free and vegetarian options available. They can cater for large parties and deliver to homes and businesses from Takapuna to East Coast Bays.

And for a refreshing dessert, customers would do well to try the Green Tea Ice-cream, the perfect way to round off a Thai meal that is hard to beat on the Shore.
