Café Melba A fresh new look for a Taka favourite
If the test of a great local cafe is that you feel right at home, then Café Melba in Takapuna passes with flying colours. The ultimate accolade of course is people voting with their custom, and they do that in droves with 'Melba' being one of Takapuna's busiest cafes.
Over the past 12 months the cafe has also taken on a fresh new look to go hand and hand with the many other changes taking place in the resurgence of Takapuna. This bright new look has also seen the introduction of a new menu. A menu that retains most of the old favourites but brings in some interesting new dishes. This new menu has been crafted by the cafe's new head chef Louise Stephens.
But consistency is probably what customers love about Café Melba. From the time they open the doors at 7am every weekday morning (7.30am on weekends) you can guarantee you are going to be greeted with a big welcome and smile and are in for great food and great coffee.
This friendly and welcoming attitude is led by cafe manager Justine Hurley, backed up by her friendly team who know most of their regulars by name.
A big plus is the location of Café Melba. It is literally right smack bang in the middle of Takapuna on Hurstmere Road. Over the road is the Post Office and Hurstmere Green which leads you on a very short stroll to the beach. The arcade that Cafe Melba is located at the start of, not only provides covered outdoor seating away from the elements but also leads to the Anzac Street Carpark (the home of the famous Takapuna Sunday Markets) which is only metres away, as is the Berkeley Cinema's and Anzac Street.
The writer is unashamedly a regular at Cafe Melba. Breakfast a couple of mornings a week, mostly choosing the "Selva Salmon Special" from a special menu developed in conjunction with local fitness trainer and Takapuna identity Selva Thankamani. Just another example of Cafe Melba engaging with this local community.
It also goes without saying that Café Melba has great coffee. Locals know their coffee is one of the very best in Takapuna. It is their own blend roasted for them locally using the world’s best 100% Arabica Beans. The blend combines the best of the smooth and sweet South American beans with a touch of aromatic Caribbean, producing a thick, full bodied cup of coffee.
Café Melba Takapuna really is the total package – welcoming, consistent, with great food and the best coffee. They don't come much better!

PS: There are a couple of other things we love Cafe Melba Takapuna for as well... their bread is sensational – all organic and supplied by Bread and Butter Bakery. They are also great supporters of our very own State Beach Series, continuing on their sponsorship that has been going for five years.
