It was just over one year ago when the well-established restaurant located at number 1 Montrose Terrace morphed into a dining destination with style. Situated in the seaside suburb of Mairangi Bay, the Montrose Café, Bistro and Bar offers patrons an experience that goes well beyond the simple task of nourishment. With its relaxed atmosphere and comfortable seating inside or out, the Montrose prides itself on great food and great service.
“We focus on good quality food,” says owner and chef Bruce Martin. “We’ve gone back to basics to provide real food and real service for real people. We make everything onsite, including our dressings and mayonnaise.”
The extensive menu covers every eating event from breakfast to after dinner. The main menu items range from $25 to $35, with a myriad of options for all palates. Dishes to tempt you include the prime fillet steak wrapped in bacon grilled as requested, with mushroom risotto cake, steamed spinach, and a field mushroom jus, and the salmon fillet smoked to order, with hickory, on a potato and dill gratin, vine ripened tomatoes and balsamic glaze. The Bistro menu is full of homestyle meals just like Grandma used to make, such as chicken and leek pie and a vegetable hot pot, great options for the coming cooler months. Bruce says they’re currently refreshing the menu with a few new flavours, so stay tuned for the appearance of some new items – especially if you enjoy vegetarian dishes.
Those patrons with food allergies are well catered for and many menu items are gluten-free. “As we prepare all our own food we can be sure of where the food comes from and what it contains,” assures Bruce.
The younger members of the family are well looked after – and there’s not a processed nugget in sight. “We treat the kids menu exactly the same as the main menu so they get real food,” says Bruce. “If the adults have snapper as fish of the day, then so do the kids. Our pizzas are made from scratch and for those kids who do eat their greens, a salad option is available.”
Live music gently plays in the background in the evenings from Thursday to Saturday and at lunch on Sundays. With some new musicians lined up even the regular patrons of Montrose will be treated to something new.
During the day, the trend of High Tea is alive and well at the Montrose, a great excuse to reinstate this revered occasion. A selection of 12 savouries, finger sandwiches and sweets per person are accompanied by tea, coffee or even a glass of sparkling sav if you prefer. Devonshire Tea is also available, a distinguished affair where fresh scones are piled with jam and cream to enjoy with a fresh brew of tea or coffee.
If time is a bit tighter, then an express lunch from the cafe menu may help alleviate some of the stress. You can also select from the assortment of delectable delights adorning the counter, the perfect match with the Montrose’s great coffee.
Those looking for a caffeine boost will find the pleasant full roast of Kapiti Coffee at the Montrose, the only place in Auckland to enjoy this boutique brand. Retail packs are also available for purchase, supplied by Dave the NZ Cheeseman, who also provides the restaurant with artisan cheeses.
