INTERIOR TRENDS: with Amanda Niell
Mid-century modern furniture, once a functional design style, is as much prevalent today as it was in the past. Amanda Neill, leading Auckland Interior Designer talks the mid-century trend and how to make it work in your home.
This retro look has made a huge comeback and it feels like it is here to stay as a staple in our homes. Like many trends, this look has come about from the influences in popular culture like the 1950’s / 1960’s based TV series Mad Men.
This design style often boasted clean lines, yet incorporated curves and sometimes atomic appeal, as it celebrated the space race. Modern materials and iconic designs such as low-slung sofas and the famous egg chair. These pieces were made to be mass-produced, as designers believed that their creations should be available to all not just a select few.
Today replicas as well as the authentic pieces are currently in demand as they have the ability to integrate nicely with other interior aesthetics – both modern and traditional. Simple lines and graphic fabrics add interest to plywood and mid-toned timber furniture. Plastics were also being used.
At Designworx we are embracing mid century design with many of our products in our retail area reflecting the era, from furniture and mirrors, to décor and lighting. We have also reupholstered vintage pieces of furniture with vintage inspired fabrics to really bring the look into this century.
If you would like to discuss any of your mid-century design ideas and how we can help you bring this style to your home please call us or drop by our studio.
