Westlake Student Generations Celebrated

Established in 1962 and now into its second half century, Westlake Boys High School is enjoying a community that boasts several families into their second or third generation of student involvement.

A Westlakers-hosted event was held last month for double and triple generation Westlake families. Old boy fathers and grandfathers were presented with photographs and mementoes of their time at school while their sons enjoyed browsing through their fathers' school yearbooks.
Westlake Old Boy, former parent and current long-serving staff member Peter Rea entertained the crowd with a thought-provoking presentation before presenting his tips on raising teenage boys. Many of these families have gained access to Westlake as a result of legislation introduced in 2010 that enables sons of former students to receive priority in the Out of Zone ballot admission system. This legislation will ensure that state schools such as Westlake Boys can look forward to the enrichment of a growing community of double and triple generation school families.

Woolf Fisher Fellowship Awarded To Westlake Science Teacher
Westlake Boys’ Head of Science Matthew Russell is one of 12 recipients nationwide to have been awarded a 2014 Woolf Fisher Fellowship.
With the aim of rewarding educational excellence in teaching the Woolf Fisher Awards have been awarded since 1960 to leading nominated secondary school teachers and principals. The fellowships are worth around $15,000 each and are designed to enable leading teachers and principals to examine teaching practices in other countries.
Matthew will travel to Australia this April to spend two weeks at a combination of state and private schools in New South Wales and Queensland. He is looking forward to observing chemistry and general science teaching practices and will be taking special note of any differences in course content. He anticipates that his Woolf Fisher Fellowship will provide him with valuable insights that will benefit Westlake’s science programme, its teachers and students.
