Stimulating Month of Art
There are some wonderful shows on at Northart this month. We are delighted to be hosting Homeland, a group exhibition curated by Deborah White of Whitespace Contemporary Art, one of Auckland’s leading gallerists.
The exhibition includes painting, mixed media sculpture and object art, and celebrates Aotearoa/New Zealand as home, as well as exploring more contentious issues relating to social, economic, environmental concerns. It has a lighter side too-included is some delightful kiwi kitsch.
The line-up of artists is Penny Howard, Michael Shepherd, Nic Moon, Bing Dawe, Greer Twiss, Lauren Lysaght, Niki Hastings-McFall, Ross Ritchie, Bob Kerr, Scott McFarlane, Madeline Child and Garry Currin. It closes 15 April.
Also currently in the gallery (and until 11 April) is an exhibition of drawings and prints by New York based Joanne Gair. Northart’s Stations of the Cross exhibition will be on display until the end of Easter.
Predator or Prey? is a show with a difference. It questions just who is the hunter and who is the hunted – man or animal. All the works in this exhibition by Hilary Weeks, are paintings of Big Cats – tigers, lions cheetahs, there is even a serval. Dr Hilary Weeks is a medical doctor and is as passionate about big cats as she is about people - the exhibition is in aid of the Auckland Zoo Conservation fund supporting the survival of the endangered Big Cats. It is in the gallery during the school holidays, so bring the children and let them make their own drawings and paintings of Big Cats (gold coin donation appreciated) – when they have finished we will put them up on the wall as a part of a special exhibition!
Predator or Prey? opens on Monday 14 April and continues until the 30th. We are hoping to have a series of talks on Big Cats and Conservation - see www.northart.co.nz/calendar or phone the gallery on 480 9633 for details.
Starting immediately after Easter is Drawings and works on paper, which is always a much anticipated exhibition on Northart’s annual calendar. Each of the 15 participating artists has been given two sheets of high quality art paper, sponsored by Gordon Harris. The Art and Graphic Store. Come along and discover what the artists have come up with from 22 April – 11 May.
Please note the gallery will be closed over Easter and Anzac Day.
