Devonport Community News this APRIL!

By Maria Teape - Devonport Community Coordinator,
Devonport Peninsula Trust

Summer may be coming to a close but there is still plenty to do if you are out and about in Devonport.

We have an especially busy weekend on the 12th and 13th of April.  On Saturday the 12th of April from 1pm-4pm the Annual Devonport Harvest Fair is on at Devonport Community Garden in Mt Cambria Reserve.  Come along and join in Devonport’s second annual downhill apple roll, teddy bear’s treasure hunt, Alice’s tea party, harvest fair games and of course there’s the giant pumpkin competition!

Then on Sunday 13th of April from 12:30pm to 4:30pm, the Devonport Dog Parade will be taking place in Windsor Reserve on Devonport’s waterfront.  This is a free, action-packed day of events, entertainment, doggy goods and services.  Showcase your beloved four-legged friends in the parade and have your pooch take part in the latest addition to this event, the Doggy Fashion Parade!  There are great prizes up for grabs too.
School holidays also kick off this month, with holidays for everyone as we observe Easter.  The combined churches of Devonport and Belmont are once again organising the annual Procession of Witness on Good Friday, 18th of April.  Departing at 10am from the band rotunda at Windsor Reserve, walk to the summit of Mt Victoria, reaching it shortly after 11am.  The following Friday is Anzac Day.  Watch out for details coming soon on Devonport’s Anzac service.
Devonport Community House will be offering an exciting holiday programme - check out their website: www.devonportcomhouse.co.nz or facebook page: www.facebook.com/DevonportCommunityHouse for details.  Also the Navy Museum has a fun finger puppet mascots making activity on throughout the holidays.  Kids get to decorate their own finger puppet, taking inspiration from some of the animals that once lived a life at sea as ship’s mascots.
For more details, visit the Navy Museum’s website: www.navymuseum.co.nz
Navy Museum will also be holding a special exhibition on Anzac Day with a paper poppy making activity.   Keeping on the theme of family entertainment, there’s no need to leave Devonport to catch all the latest kids movies!  The Vic will be showing Rio 2, Mr Peabody & Sherman, Muppets Most Wanted and The LEGO movie.  Showing times are listed on The Vic’s website: www.thevic.co.nz
Corellis Café is hosting two live music gigs during April - no cover charge.  On Tuesday 8th Cousin Alice performs with special guest Nigel Gavin and playing and on Tuesday 22nd April, blues band The Remarkables take the stage. Both gigs start at 8pm.

That’s all from me for now.  Enjoy and have a great month!
