MILFORD - Everyone's place
Milford’s ‘Mr Antiques’
Bernard Molloy goes to the ends of the earth to find antiques, quite literally. This jovial, larger-than-life chap revels in his treasure trove of retro goodies on Kitchener Road, Milford, which he keeps healthily stocked through his regular overseas trips to hunt for ‘goodies’.
Calling in on Bernard at the ever-expanding emporium that is Molloy’s of Milford, is akin to having a catch up with an old friend, in a bygone age.
For over four years this former sales and marketing director has been sourcing and selling dated keepsakes, large and small to many of the Shore’s collectors of old oddities. Next up on Bernard’s treasure-seeking travels is a trip to the UK next month.
He will be on the hunt for Georgian silver, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco pieces in particular but will no doubt be tempted by other quirky items that happen to take his fancy.
He said: “This time, Deco glass will also probably be on my wishlist. I brought a lot of Art Deco items back from my last trip and most of that has sold now. It’s very popular, but its hard to get here.”
Bernard will spend many hours trawling the antiques fairs, flea markets, car boot sales and antiques shops and is particularly keen to get to the Annual Antiques Fair at Shepton Mallet. “I’m looking forward to getting along to this annual antiques fair, which is supposedly the biggest event of its kind in Europe. There will be over 600 stalls over five halls, so that will be a big one!”
And his finds will be back in New Zealand before he is, as he has made arrangements to fly the items back before he makes the return journey.
Cue plans for a Collectors Club event in early June to show off all his finds and give loyal customers the chance to get first pick of the stock whilst enjoying a glass of bubbly before it goes on general sale. To find out more or register for the June event, give Bernard a call on 09 488 7326, or even better, go in and see him - here’s betting you’ll see something that catches your eye!
