A Blooming Business

“I love every aspect of what I do!” Exclaims Franca, owner of Florienne, a delightful florist business on Hurstmere Road, Takapuna.

And we can see why…from the moment you enter this serene, precious paradise of petals, you can’t help but want to touch, feel and smell each and every fragile flower.

From a single stem to lush weddings and even big design shows here in NZ and overseas (she is currently booked in to display her talents at the Singapore Garden Festival in August), Franca cannot get enough of her sweet smelling stems.
“I grew up surrounded by flowers in Holland, I never thought of it as a career until I took a gap year – my friend and I decided to do a floristry course for fun – and 20 years later here I am!” She explains as she laughs at the thought.
After 20 years, you would think those early morning starts trying to pick the best of the buds at auctions would wane, but not for Franca and her team, which includes Jo, Emma, Deb and newbie Kate - it’s all done in a day’s work.
“A typical day starts at 6am at the auctions, then we design and create bouquets and send them out. After we close, it’s prep time for the next day or setting up for weddings or functions. It gets very busy – we have done 27 weddings already this year!”
And does she get any unusual or interesting requests? “Oh yes – we just made a beautiful heart shaped bouquet with 50 red roses for a Valentine’s Day proposal.”
We hope she said yes!
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Florienne is the ideal spot to find that perfect posy every mum loves. “Popular flowers are Roses, Lilies, Orchids, Tulips, and Chrysanthemums. Also plants are very popular such as Phalaenopsis Orchids and Bromeliads or, for something unique, modern stems in glass vases,” suggests Franca.
And what does a florist with a child get for Mother’s Day? “Choccies and wine – but I’d still love to get flowers – you can never tire of flowers!”
When someone who lives and breathes flowers still can’t get enough of them, they’re in the right business! And it shows.
