INTERIOR TRENDS: with Amanda Niell

Into the blue

The colour of the ocean and sky blue is one of the most popular colours in the colour wheel. Amanda Neill, leading Auckland Interior Designer talks the colour blue and how it affects our everyday lives.

We are lucky enough to live in a beautiful part of the world. The coastal North Shore suburbs of Devonport, Takapuna and Milford are surrounded by ocean and at this time of year big, beautiful skies in the most magnificent blue.

Because of our beautiful surroundings we receive many requests from clients for the colour blue to be incorporated into schemes within the home. It may be an entire scheme that incorporates the colour blue or it may just be a few décor pieces to finish off the space. However, the colour is used it creates a sense of coolness, which is idea at this time of year in the height of summer.
Blue is a constant in our lives and is the collective colour of the spirit – it invokes rest and can cause the body to produce chemicals that are calming. A pure blue is the colour of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality. It creates a sense of solitude, peace and wellbeing, which makes it a wonderful colour to use in a small boys or babies room. Blue opens the flow of communication and counteracts chaos or agitation.  Blue spaces are often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure and orderly. But not all blues are serene and sedate – electric or brilliant blues become dynamic and dramatic – an engaging colour that expresses exhilaration and the overuse of the colour can create a feeling of cold and aloofness.
A fantastic colour combination is the use of blue with crisp whites. This creates a classic and timeless look and when used in stripes create that instant beachside feeling. You may not live directly next to the ocean but you can still invoke the serenity of the beach by creating a blue and white scheme in your home in the typical ‘Hamptons Style’.
