Skate Day Success
Towards the end of 2013, Ngataringa Skate Day was held in Devonport with great success. Now, it's time to announce the winners of the photo competition element that was part of the event. There were a lot of cameras out on the day capturing all the action, and we're pleased to (finally) announce our two winners: Daniel Simkin won the Adult Amateur Category and Shaun Lee won the Junior Amateur Category, both showing favour for the Canon D-series digital SLRs.
Daniel's winning photograph stood out to us because we felt it captured the inclusive intention of the event, as well as celebrating our community spirit. The image of two young brothers, enjoying the outdoors and spending time together as a family is, after all, part of what this is all about. Bringing people together with common interests, and injecting a bit of healthy competition into the mix!
Shaun's winning photograph caused a double take from the less skate-savvy judges, who took a second to realise the board had been captured mid-flip and was in fact, completely upside down. Combined with the color contrast in the vintage blue of the stairs and the moody skies above, there was a delicate balance of calm and tension that appealed to us all.
A big congratulations to our winners and thank you to all our entrants, see you all next year! - Maria Teape, Devonport Community Co-ordinator.
