FACE IT: Beauty with Amanda Care
Sun Spots? Sorted.
For her first column of 2014, beauty expert Amanda Care of Face It, Devonport, looks at one of summer’s skin issues - pigmentation...
I hope you've having a great summer and making the most of our great local beaches. This month I'd like to touch on pigmentation. It's that time of year when you will start to notice freckles and sunspots looking more obvious after time in the sun, usually they will fade again in winter but in some cases they remain.
If you notice changes such as flaking, roughness or colour on certain spots, I strongly advise you get them checked by your doctor or a dermatologist.
Causes of pigmentation:
Sun Exposure - this causes the cells (melanocytes) that produce pigmentation (melanin) to become highly reactive to the damage, and produce uneven colour.
Hormone Influences - such as Melasma or Chloasma which is a form of pigmentation stimulated by oestrogen. Pregnancy, the oral contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy can all exacerbate it.
Medications - such as the hormonal medications, photosensitisers such as Minocycline, chemotherapy drugs and anti-malarial drugs.
How to correct it: At Face It I have a range of treatments to tackle sun spots and give you a more even skin tone and I can personalise a treatment plan for you. The fantastic new "Ultra Brightening" range in Ultraceuticals has been proven to visibly improve the appearance of pigmentation and enhance the skins luminosity and clarity. The serum in particular, under medically supervised testing, was found to be as effective at improving the appearance of pigmentation as a prescription strength tretinoin and hydroquinone cream.
I've been using the cleanser, serum and moisturiser in this range and after three months I certainly see a difference and my clients are also giving extremely positive feedback.
