INTERIOR TRENDS: with Amanda Niell

Setting the Christmas Scene

It’s that time of year again with Christmas once again just around the corner. Christmas fever has definitely set in as we all search for gifts for loved ones and décor to bring our homes to life. Amanda Neill, leading Auckland Interior Designer talks Christmas in your home and how to make the most of the festive spirit no matter what your budget.
Christmas décor comes in many shapes and sizes.  Many homes start with the ultimate must have – a Christmas tree, from there your creative expression can begin. Do you prefer homemade decorations that tell the story of your family and life? Or do you stock up on the latest and greatest decorations available following the latest trends, styles and colour ways? Whatever your style, trees are the true symbol of Christmas in your home and the starting point for your festive décor. You may also want to add a wreath on your door; again these can either be homemade from decorations you have around the home or, what about fresh decorations from your garden that really represent our side of the world at this time of year? Otherwise, beautiful floral arrangements are available at most local florists. You can add décor to mantel’s, decorate plants in your home or add lights to the outside of your property to really get into the Christmas spirit.
The pièce de résistance to this décor will be on Christmas Day and your Christmas table. Firstly pick a colour palette that speaks to you, not just the Christmas tradition. As Christmas colours clash with most interiors why not enhance your rooms’ existing hues instead of just defaulting to red and green. If all else fails, a crisp white table will always be elegant and timeless. No matter what your colour palette, the key is a classic approach, be consistent with both your colours and your materials. Your family may take a more formal traditional approach to Christmas with all the trimmings or you may celebrate Christmas in a more relaxed, New Zealand style. Whatever you choose, make sure you bring out your best dining set and cutlery – the time to use it is now! Dress the table, arrange and light candles no matter what time of day, choose fresh floral centerpieces and create the wow factor. This could be using an extra long tree limb as a way to arrange decorations on or over your table or filling a platter with ornaments to make a shining centerpiece.
This year at Designworx we have set up our own Christmas Table in our shop front window. We have included some beautiful pieces of décor that we hope can inspire you to get creative in your home and at your table. We have a huge range of décor, gifts and inspiration for you and would love to see you in our showroom soon.
As the year is drawing to a close we reflect on a busy year for Designworx. We would like to thank you all for your ongoing support and business in 2013. We will be closed from Christmas Eve and having recharged will be back in January 2014. Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year with your families and friends and we look forward to seeing you in 2014.
