Takapuna Retail Feature: The Old Lolly Shop

Old School Christmas Goodies

With Christmas fast approaching, many people are contemplating where to buy some yummy treats for the festive season. The Old Lolly Shop in Parkway Arcade, Hurstmere Road, Takapuna is the perfect one stop shop.

The top recommendation for Christmas from owner Rachel is the dark chocolate cherries. The store is currently selling a lot of these as corporate gifts and Secret Santa presents as they can be packaged in whatever size bag or box people like.

“They are a beautiful semi-dried cherry covered in dark chocolate with quite an intense cherry flavour. They have a nice consistency and everyone who has tried them has loved them,” said Rachel.

No working day is ever the same at the Old Lolly Shop. They cater for corporate orders, make their own lollipops, fudges, and brittles, as well as various other things to order. The Old Lolly Shop often makes special orders that are a bit different to their normal products, as they try to do what they can to accommodate what people want. They also bag their own lollies, buying them in bulk to get a better price and to ensure that they are fresh all of the time.

When Rachel was asked what she most enjoys about her job she replied,

“I like that it makes people happy, it’s a big reason why we decided to open a lolly shop. We thought it would be fun and it is fun. People come in happy, they like the look of the shop, love the old style lollies and they go out happy, so it makes us happy.”

Events are consistently held in the shop throughout the year. Lollipop making takes place most Sunday mornings - the schedule is available on the events page of their website. People are welcome to pop in and watch the classes, or they can book in and make a lollipop themselves. The lollipop classes appeal to all age groups, with kids parties, school groups, retirement homes, interest groups, and sometimes private after hours parties like hens nights, all booking in for lollipop making classes.

Rachel loves working in the tight-knit Takapuna community.

“I have a lot of regular customers who come in and they are always smiling and happy. Even if they come in stressed, they buy some lollies, and then they go out happy. I like being part of the community here. I think it’s a nice, friendly, and relaxed community.”

The shop’s best sellers are their handmade lollipops, and at the moment their handmade candy canes. Their fudges are also really popular and the New Zealand made New Generation liquorice range has also proven to be a hit recently as it is usually only available in markets. The shop has recently imported from the UK the much sought after Kinnerton chocolate, which is certified nut free, making it perfect for those people with extreme nut allergies who struggle to find nut free chocolate.
