AMI NORTH HARBOUR NETBALL: News

New ‘Ones to Watch’ and more...

2013 has been a year of change for netball in New Zealand with the implementation of the new Netball New Zealand netball delivery structure. For the first time in 13 years, Netball North Harbour was able to field a team in the Lion Foundation National Championships under the guidance of Yvonne Willering and Linda Vagana. The team placed fifth, convincingly defeating Southland in the 5th/6th playoff 69-40.
A couple of young players who performed well in this team were 19 year old Malia Paseka, who was in the 2013 LG Mystics team, a member of the World Champion NZ Under 21 team and has recently been signed for the Magic for the 2014 season. Malia was joined in the North Harbour team by 17 year old up and comer Fa’amu Ross. Fa’amu was a key member of both the North Harbour Under 19 and New Zealand Secondary Schools teams earlier this year. Both players, I’m sure, will be athletes to watch out for in the very near future.
Following the Netball North Harbour 60th Jubilee celebrations in 2012, our oldest and one of the largest clubs, Shore Rovers, celebrated their 60th Jubilee in style by winning both the 2013  Premier 1 and Premier 2 grades in hard fought finals. Congratulations to Shore Rovers and their members on reaching their 60th year, this is testament to the commitment of the people who have and continue to lead this club.
Westlake Girls qualified for the recent New Zealand Secondary School finals by placing 6th out of 112 teams in the Upper North Island qualifying tournament during winter tournament week at Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre in early September.
A total of 16 teams won the right to compete for the title of New Zealand Secondary School Champions at Auckland Netball Centre during the October School holidays. Westlake performed extremely well placing 8th nationally. Well done to Tania Flavell and her team on an
outstanding performance.
With the international netball season underway, umpires, Yvonne Morgan and Fay Meiklejohn will be flying the flag for Netball North Harbour with appointments to officiate on the international stage. Yvonne has been appointed to the Australian Diamonds v Malawi series in late October, and both Yvonne and Fay will officiate in the Fast 5 series being held at the Vector Arena, 8th – 10th November.
