Mairangi Arts Centre: News

A Fair of the Art

Over forty local and national artists will be showcasing their talents at the inaugural ‘Creative Directions’ Art Fair at the Mairangi Arts Centre from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 November 2013.
This Art Fair is a major event for the Arts Centre and offers North Shore residents the opportunity to invest in artwork from some of Auckland’s most promising up-and-coming artists.  Works on sale will include paintings, photography, ceramics, glass, sculpture and jewellery as well as a huge cash and carry section.
The ‘Creative Directions Art Fair’ kicks off with a Gala Preview night on Friday 15 November at 7pm.  Tickets to the Gala event are limited with the ticket price of $35 including a live auction, drinks, canapés, live gypsy jazz music, meet the artists and first dibs on the art for sale.  Tickets are available now at the Arts Centre counter or phone 09 4782237. The Fair is then open to the public from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November with entry by gold coin donation.
This is a wonderful opportunity to invest in some special pieces for yourself and also to shop for one-off Christmas gifts.  The Art Fair also supports a good cause as  30% commission on each sale goes to the Mairangi Arts Centre Charitable Trust and the Mairangi Bay Surf Life Saving Club. Your purchase will help fund the programmes of these two community organisations.
The Mairangi Arts Centre has become known over the years not only for the high calibre of the art it produces, but also for the standard and diversity of its art classes for both adults and children.  Throughout the weekend of the Art Fair tutors will be giving free demonstrations in various art media and the centre offers preferential enrolment for our 2014 classes. Each year classes fill up fast so this is a great chance to secure your place and start to explore your creative side. The timetable of our free demonstrations will be available on our website at www.mairangiarts.co.nz closer to the time.

Mosaic Workshop – 19 October 2013
with Anne Egan
Want to explore, nourish and develop your creative self?

You can with mosaics. In this beginners course you will learn everything you will need to get you started, to inspire and to nourish your creative self from basic design, tools and techniques.
The world of mosaic is full of creativity, colour, shape and endless possibilities.  And it’s much easier than you might think.
Imagine the delight in making beautiful mosaic art for your home, garden, family and friends. Think about the joy of creating something whole from something broken. Mosaic art is extremely diverse and versatile and you don’t need to feel that you are artistic to be able to produce great results.  Come along and see how easy it is with a friendly mosaic tutor to help and inspire you.
Extras: base and tiles.  You can purchase these from me on the day or bring your own.
I have a variety of bases to use:  mirrors, concrete cones and hearts, garden tiles (these can be stepping stones for the garden or some people use them in the kitchen as hotplates), wooden shapes (cats, dogs, birds, hearts, dragonflies, butterflies, and fish), and polystyrene balls.  I also have a large variety of tiles to choose from.  For a first project it is best to start small to ensure you get the piece finished and ready to take home.  If you have a project in mind and require assistance in acquiring the base please let me know and I may be able to help.
