Discover Devonport this October!

Congratulations to all the schools who took part in the recent Devonport Peninsula Beach Clean-up! Over 1000 students took part, picking up rubbish from beaches in Devonport to Takapuna. Plastic bottle lids and cigarette butts continue to be the scourge of our beaches along with some real nasty items - three syringes were found at Narrow Neck beach. We plan to make this a biennial event.
There are lots of great events coming up in October: The official opening of the new Bayswater Bridge is happening on Sunday 5th October, from 10:30am-1pm. This is promising to be a great day with family activities, bike rides and maintenance, sausage sizzle (free), ice creams and more. Come along, check out the great views up the bay, stretch your legs on the bridge and enjoy the first of several new community assets in the Devonport peninsula area.
Devonport Rotary is offering the opportunity to visit ten Devonport ‘homes of distinction’ on their Fine Homes Tour of Devonport, raising money for Alzheimer’s New Zealand and The Devonport Rotary Charitable Trust. The tour takes place on Friday 18th October 2013 from 9.30am to 3.30pm and includes special offers from local cafes and restaurants on the day. Tickets are available at Bayleys, 83 Victoria Rd, Devonport and on line at www.devonportrotary.co.nz
There is also plenty going on to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays. Devonport Community Garden in association with LittleCooks are providing a cooking and gardening programme for children. The programme is taking place at the gardens located in Mt Cambria Reserve. For those who like to be on the move, Belmont Racquets Club is offering squash and tennis holiday programmes and Football Kidz are running a football skills programme based at Takapuna Grammar School. There will also be programmes on offer at Devonport Library, Devonport Community House and the Navy Museum – check out their websites for details.
If you like to celebrate Halloween, then Vauxhall School’s Monster Mash Halloween themed fair is just the ticket! The Monster Mash is taking place in the grounds of Vauxhall School on Saturday 19th October from 3pm to 7pm. Everyone is encouraged to dress in the best scary outfit and enjoy a variety of entertainment and yummy food! Tickets are $10 per person and can be bought from the school office, Urban Kids store or Devonport Harcourts in the village.

That’s all from me this time.
