TIGHT LINES & NO LIES Fishing with Hunts Sports of Milford
Big Winter Fish are here!
Our Channel Magazine fishing page is provided by Ian Hunt from Hunts Sports Store – that institution up the hill from Milford on East Coast Road. Hunts are big into fishing and also supply darts and accessories. ‘Hunty’ is a colourful character who has the answer for all your fishing requirements and he’s sure to have a story or two as well. Hunts have been part of the local community since 1963.
Well winter has finally arrived and it appears so have the big fish.
There seems to be plenty of action in the shallows which is really great for those either land base fishing or in small boats. There have been some huge fish taken in the last month with two over the 30lb mark around Tiri in the shallows. So get the berley pot out and give it a bash.
The salmon berley I believe to be in a class of its own as it leaves a very noticeable oil slick which you can be seen for miles (slight exaggeration!) and the good thing is you can see how the current line changes as the tide rises or drops which will assist you in regards to where you position your bait. So it’s back to the smallest of sinkers and a you need to keep in contact with your bait as the little blighters can be quite finicky at the moment as I said last report.
If you as fishing in broken ground try a small cubed bait for the elusive but yummy trevally.
With the fish being tight to the rocks it’s great for the softbaiter. A small jig head (1/4 to1/2 oz) is all you need as you want a very slow descent of your softbait. I prefer this method of wash fishing as you just never know what you are in for.
Because of the nature of the weather be sure that you have plenty of warm clothing and all the appropriate safety equipment on hand – VHS, phone (in a water proof case) etc. When you are travelling wide and it looks like there is a change, up your pick and get out of it as there is always tomorrow and you can avoid a pounding on the way home.
Remember, we've got all the stuff you need at Hunts for your winter fishing. Come on in and have a chat – we can help you catch those big fish in the colder months!
