TIGHT LINES & NO LIES Fishing with Hunts Sports of Milford

Fishing on the up!

Our Channel Magazine fishing page is provided by Ian Hunt from Hunts Sports Store – that institution up the
hill from Milford on East Coast Road. Hunts are big into fishing and also supply darts and accessories. ‘Hunty’
is a colourful character who has the answer for all your fishing requirements and he’s sure to have a story or
two as well. Hunts have been part of the local community since 1963.

Well things are looking up on the fishing front with the much needed rain having the effect of both dropping the water temperature and the runoff feeding the nutrients into the sea (natural berley).

We have had a few good reports of nice fish being taken in close to Rangitoto, while fishing at sun-up in the shallows with heaps of berley and back by 10 o’clock with a couple of fish around the 5kg mark to boot!
On the berley front salmon is the winner. Just poke holes in the bag – don’t cut slices as it disappears really quick – but the oil slick is right out there, you can see it for miles. It's a great indicator as to what the current is doing. Most of the charter fleet are still going wide and the punters are getting their share of good table fish.
On the rock fishing side of things I saw a couple of 4-5kg fish taken off Wenderholm, so it’s time to get out there and do it. The change of light with the right tides – I have found one to two hours either side of high or low tides to be the best.
If you are land based google earth is a super tool to use and there is a Spot-X Surfcasting Book on the market with over 400 spots with all the relevant information – best tides, access, rigs, bait,  berley and best winds. A must have for the keen fisho.
It’s great to have Grenville Malcon back working in the store on Thursday's, Friday's and Saturday's as most of you know he is very passionate in regards to all facets of fishing, especially softbaiting. He is also running three hour clinics, so if you want to fine tune your skills or are not getting your share it is well worth considering grabbing a couple of mates and coming on board for these clinics that cost only $60.00 per person. Believe me you'll learn heaps and you'll be catching heaps as well!

Tight Lines & No Lies,
Hunty.
