TIGHT LINES & NO LIES Fishing with Hunts Sports of Milford

The wet stuff should bring them back

Our Channel Magazine fishing page is provided by Ian Hunt from Hunts Sports Store – that institution up the
hill from Milford on East Coast Road. Hunts are big into fishing and also supply darts and accessories. ‘Hunty’
is a colourful character who has the answer for all your fishing requirements and he’s sure to have a story or
two as well. Hunts have been part of the local community since 1963.

Finally getting some of that wet stuff. About time! The fantastic weather we have had has made for a great summer, but it has resulted in tough fishing.
Hopefully the arrival of rain will drop the water temperature a tad and get them back on the bite. This hard fishing is very relaxing (still beats working) but the family is getting hungry!
The one great thing about the temperature is there are lots of Kingi’s for the taking, either on baits (piper being the best) or on poppers and surface lures. The Kingi’s seem be hanging around everywhere from Tiri to Rakino, and great fun on light line. They are great to turn into pate if you are smoking them.
There have been reports of good stocks of fish in the Firth of Thames. It’s a sure sign when most of the downtown charters are heading that way.
On the charter scene Nick from Sandspit Charters is having a ball running two charters a day and the reports from his clients that come into the shop is he’s ‘the man’ if you wish to fish the Kawau and Flat Rock area.
There appears to be a few fish turning up this side of the channel so take a lazy cruise back and keep an eye on your sounder.
I was up the Bay of Islands a couple of weeks ago and it’s the same up there. Heaps of small fish.

Tight Lines & No Lies,
Hunty.
