Swing in Style

Gone are the days when golf clothing consisted of drab colours, uniform diamond argyle sweaters and unflattering ‘plus fours’.

In 2013, golf stars and social players alike are sporting well-fitting, eye-catching gear to put an extra zing in their swing.

Local golfing personality Annette Muir is director of Devonport Golf Shop and is the woman to talk to on the Shore for anything golf-related. An accomplished player and Waitemata Golf Club member for 25 years, Annette is an expert in her field. She knows not only how to hit a mean drive and make a lengthy putt but she is all across the latest technical equipment, clothing lines and developments in the game, having run the Derby St golf pro shop for over 12 years.

She said: “Golf is like anything; you need to be taught what to do. I liken golf to skiing in many ways, with all the equipment, the clothing, getting on the chairlift to the different runs versus getting around the different holes on the course. You need to be taught what to do and what equipment you need to be confident and enjoy your game.”

Titleist, Ping, Mizuno and TaylorMade are world-renowned brands that have stayed strong throughout world financial crises and Annette carries an extensive range of equipment from these golfing heavyweights, with ‘fitting carts’ providing the very latest in customised club fittings.

And the Derby St-based club and pro shop now have the added advantage of being a member of the Institute of Golf. Big names in New Zealand golf like Lydia Ko, Mike Hendry and recent national stroke play champion, 19-year-old Cameron Jones, have all benefited from the expertise of the Institute. On-site Institute of Golf instructor Peter Ranford explains: “Being a recognised Institute of Golf facility means we offer a holistic approach to golf coaching; encompassing the mental, physical, technical and club fitting sides.”

Peter is keen to further grow the club’s junior section and has made an impressive start, doubling the number of junior members in the six months he has been based there.

The golf shop has developed a stellar reputation, particularly amongst female golfers, for its superb range of golf clothing, with the latest lines from brands, such as Adidas, causing visitors to ensure they factor in adequate time to shop, before or after playing. Annette is expanding her men’s clothing range and is happy to ‘style’ any of the male players who may still be walking the course in jaded attire.

Annette encourages anyone thinking of taking up the sport not to hesitate in giving it a go, even if only for a social game or to gain the basic skills needed to be able to accept a corporate golf invitation.

She said: “We are really lucky down here. It’s a great course to play on because it’s nice and flat with no hills. We’ve always had a reputation of being a friendly club that’s very welcoming. Once you start, you’re hooked! I only wish that I had started playing earlier!”
