Fine Yarns and Fashion Show

As I write this it is the first time we have had rain for quite a while. Dare I say, it is quite refreshing that it’s settling the dust and everything is starting to look cleaner outside. I think I am a winter bunny.

Very busy times for us here at Crafty Knitwits with building works going on. Apologies for any inconvenience to customers, but we promise it will be worth it! The yarns arriving daily are really exciting; beautiful Debbie Bliss yarns and pattern books, Noro arriving soon, our favourite Merino from Filatura Di Crosa, Zara, Zara Plus and Zarina - a beautiful yarn to knit with, so wearable with super wash quality. And some great new yarns are in from Naturally NZ - great to knit up for kids - Naturally Loyal Tweed, and you have to see the Naturally Drift Brights range. This is a brilliant range supported by some really good patterns (leaflets) for that hard to find age range two to ten-year-olds.

On the other side of the store we have classes running now. These are such fun and we’re seeing the production of some really lovely quilts through these classes. There is still time to sign up for some of the classes. Check in with us or go online to our website and see what we have to offer.
Don’t forget lampshades; any shape and size is possible. We have a lovely range of fabrics that you can choose from. Come and have a look at some of the shades we have already made up in the shop, it may inspire you to brighten up a corner or your dining room. We have a really lovely Tiffany shade made up at the moment, brightening up an old lamp stand. It’s worth a look!
As you can see from our advertisement, we are running a fashion show in April to give some inspiration from new designs in our different yarns. We are going to run the show for two nights as numbers are limited for each show. So if you are interested be quick to get your tickets. This is our initial effort to raise funds for our Knitathon Child Cancer Fund. This year we will be running the actual Knitathon in August - date and details will be confirmed in the next issue of Channel.

Tip of the Month
Substituting Yarn

For best results - to ensure the garment looks the same as the pattern picture - use the yarn recommended. However, sometimes that is not possible, eg. the pattern might be for a yarn that is no longer available or you really love another yarn that you want to use or you have some in your stash that needs to be used up. If you are going to substitute a different yarn, take a little time and do a few experiments. The yarn you substitute must get to the same tension. You don’t necessarily need to use the same needle size as specified in the pattern, but you need to get the same tension so that you end up with the right size, eg. 28 stitches and 24 rows to 10cms/4 inches square is what you may see in the pattern or on the yarn label. Take time to knit up a sample tension square. To calculate the amount you need, refer to the yardage on the yarn label that you are going to use against the yardage of the yarn recommended. Remember - do a tension test and look at the finished example to ensure you like how it knits up before you start the garment.
