Conquer Breakouts... I Did

Shore beauty expert Amanda Care shares her secrets to looking and feeling gorgeous with Channel readers in her monthly column. Owner of Face It in Devonport, Amanda takes a look this month at the nuisance of skin breakouts...

I’ll let you in on a little known fact about myself. Contrary to what a lot of people I meet think, I wasn’t blessed with ‘good’ skin.
As a teenager and young adult, my skin was terrible. I’m talking breakouts so bad, that when I was 16 and working after school as a checkout operator a small child asked his mother if I had ‘chickenpox’.

I’m pretty sure myself and the child’s mother wanted to just disappear
at that moment!
Eventually, I spoke to my mother about my skin. My mother suggested I visit the local beauty therapist for advice. Turned out to be the best thing I ever did as I was taught how to care for my skin and along with regular facials it slowly began to improve.
These days my skin looks great but clearing the scarring and blemishes was no overnight quick fix. The great news is; there are so many more treatment options and advanced skin care available for problem skin now.
Depending on the severity of breakouts a treatment plan of any of the following may be recommended.
Mandelic Peel: A safe, non-toxic peel with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. I find this an ideal treatment to unblock pores and deeply exfoliate, with the added bonus of brightening and clarifying the complexion.
Microdermabrasion: This is a machine that uses crystals to polish the skin. I found it to be a really effective way to lift hyperpigmentation, recent scars and smooth the appearance of open pores. Not recommended for active acne, but perfect for those that have cleared up their breakouts and would like to treat the after-effects.
UltraSonophoresis: A big word for a small piece of equipment, this treatment uses ultrasonic vibrations to optimise absorption of active ingredients into the skin. I like to use this as an add-on after peels or microdermabrasion to really get the serums down into the skin where they can start work on repairing the cells.
Intense Pulsed Light: This treatment can be beneficial for both active breakouts and the residual recent scarring after effects. I’ve had great results on clients with darkened acne scars left on their face.
Products: Ingredients in skin care are much more advanced and gentle now, gone are the days of the alcohol soaked acne wipes. I recommend the clinically proven Ultraceuticals Ultra Clear Treatment Lotion. This product is non-drying, benzoyl proxide and paraben free. Even if you only have occasional breakouts, with regular, daily use it will treat and improve the whiteheads and blackheads, whilst reducing redness and oil.
