Exciting and rather different exhibitions at Northart

Northart continues its run of exciting and rather different exhibitions this month, starting with The BIG Quilt Show, an exhibition of very large quilts by makers from throughout New Zealand as well as one from Australia, which opens on Saturday 3rd November.
Northart is fortunate to have a very spacious gallery with a high stud, which allows exhibitions of very large works – and large they are, many of the 16 quilts in the show are king bed sized. It is a very diverse show with a number of quite traditional quilts, some with colour combinations that are quite unusual, through to very contemporary quilts. It will be in the gallery until 23 November.
Face Value, an exhibition by three Auckland based photographers, Dorina Jotti, Yvonne Walker and Melanie Church, celebrates children with Down Syndrome. The images in the exhibition show the children being kids just like any other kids, with their own personalities, their own likes and dislikes.
On the opening night all children can take part in a special photography workshop, which is free of charge. All they need to do is to bring along a digital point and shoot camera (if they have one, there will have some spares available), they will be given a quick lesson on how to use it and then they will be set loose on the crowd! The photos they take will be projected onto a wall in the gallery for the night. There will also be a black booth set up at the opening: so people can take some fun shots of themselves which will be incorporated into a photographic montage and displayed in the gallery during the show. It will be a whole lot of fun, so come along between 5pm and 7pm on Sunday 11th November and join us in celebrating children with Down syndrome. The exhibition will continue until 28th November.
Opening a few days later, will be the graduation exhibition of Hungry Creek Art and Craft School. If past years graduation shows are anything to go on, it will be an energetic show with lots of new ideas and some stunningly beautiful jewellery.
Another opening this time on the first day of December and again from 5pm-7pm, is the much awaited Pre-Christmas $100 (or less) Show. It is an enormously popular event, and for many a highlight of the Northart calendar. Once again there will be a huge variety of high quality small items of art and craft: something to suit every taste – from functional and non-functional ceramics to glass, paintings, drawings, collages, weaving, knitting, glass, small decorative pieces and lots of jewellery – necklaces, brooches, rings and bracelets. It is a cash and carry show, so once you have selected the pieces you want and paid for them, you can take them with you. Because it is a cash and carry show, the displays are replenished regularly with new works often by new artists appearing daily.
If you can’t get to the gallery during regular opening hours (10am – 4pm daily during exhibitions, closed public holidays) make up a party and come along after hours (a small fee applies).
