1000 games and still going strong at the YMCA

Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs recently received accolades after completing 900 games for the famous football club. However for some Auckland footballers 900 games is a mere warm-up.
Back in the mid-Eighties Erich Bachman and Rob Ferguson, both lawyers, coerced one or two friends to join them and enter an indoor six-a-side football team in the Auckland YMCA weekly competition.
With a view that the beautiful game was secondary to a post-match natter and beer, the guys plucked a name out a hat (the “Moody Blues”) and played their first match. No-one can recall the score that night but a weekly game became a habit.
Now more than 25 years later the team are still going strong and with most of the original line-up intact, have completed their 1000th game.
In a typical year the team will play about 40 odd matches. Now known as “Atheletico Zimmerframe”, as a concession to their age, the team play in the Monday night competition at North Shore YMCA and retire to the local pub for a cold pint afterwards.
“No one is more surprised than us when the team trots out at the start of each year.” said team spokesman Rod de Lisle. “The rigours of age and family commitments have put paid to most of the old teams we used to face. But we keep going and still manage to occasionally embarrass the younger teams by beating them. We find that bribing the ref goes a long way.”
In the early days winning the league was a regular occurrence but latterly the team, now mostly 50-plus, are happy to win the occasional game and to avoid injury.
Stalwarts Rodger Whitehead, Robert Ferguson, Rod de Lisle and Cameron McClean are still playing along with newer members Colin Lucas and Kevin Barry. Rob and Kevin each have a son who now fills-in regularly for the team to cover injury, as well giving a much needed injection of youth. The team celebrated its 1000th game with a friendly match against a selection of ex-players on Monday April 23rd.
